At least 12 people are feared dead and several trapped after a portion of an uder-construction flyover collapsed near the Varanasi Cantt railway station. Rescue efforts are on.
Pictures from the incident site showed passengers being pulled out from a car trapped under the collapsed portion of the flyover.
“Deputy chief minister KP Maurya and minister Neelkanth Tiwari have been directed by the chief minister Yogi Adityanath to visit Varanasi’s Cantt area. The CM has expressed grief and directed the administration to speed up rescue operation,” Sidharth Nath Singh, UP health minister said.
The incident occurred post-noon, officials said adding rescue teams were rushed to the spot. Senior police and administration officers also reached the site of the incident. “It is feared that several people are buried under the rubble,” an official said. Some vehicles were also crushed in the incident, they added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sadness over the incident and ensured full possible support to those affected.
